Engine swaps can be done in a number of ways, and can therefore yield different results in terms of reliability and servicing. Inevitably, in any swap, there will be the ultra-confusing and disheartening moment when you are staring at a pile of tangled wires and wondering why you didn’t get into repairing sewing-machines or flashlights (that’s torches for my UK friends).

Here is that point in the Audi 80 to 2.7tt swap. What you’re looking at is a full harness from a A4 avant, the dash harness from a S4 avant and the dash harness as well as the engine harness from an 80. Now to make it all work together…

With all the right starting materials, it is then possible to trace wires and splice in body plugs. Doing it this way makes everything easier as not only can the harness be easily removed if needed, but also the correct OBDII ports is retained and all the switchgear works.

It takes longer initially, but there is a satisfaction when finished, and retaining all the correct wires and colours means less problems later on. For this project the S4 fuse cluster was also used.
